OBJECTIVE: To determine the date the house was built and the individual who owned it at the time.
INFORMATION PROVIDED BY CLIENT: Beginning of chain of deeds, news articles and stories from locals.
HOUSE DATE: c.1769 - 1789
DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT: The first step in the process was to obtain the chain of deeds as far back as possible. This became challenging as they were followed back to the early 1800s since it entered a time when deeds were not required to be recorded. The changing borders of counties and east and west Jersey further complicated the search. The earliest deed on record was from 1830. From this point newspapers, tax records, probate recrods, maps and road returns were searched and analyzed. A survey map was located and appeared to note the house in what seems to be the same location today. This placed the house as being built no later than 1789. A Road Return was discovered naming the owner of the land in 1765, but confirmation of the existence of the building is unconfirmed as of yet.
The next step in this process would be to search family records of those who lived between the suspected dates to determine if any of the residents wrote about the house and/or its construction.
FORMAT: Intial - Report with the potential for a hardbound book for family memorial.
DURATION OF PROJECT: Ongoing
